Wasp Nest In Winter

By Meg Smith

In the February air, a closed heart floats –
strong, hollow, bowing a
a stripped maple over Route 3.
The wind cannot caucus it.
It is my mile marker.
A city may sleep inside it,
But  we are both awakening on this new day,
As I go a new mile, with such a lantern above me.
